The average campers might say to themselves, “Why
should I go out and spend the extra money buying a
new sleeping bag and pillow for camping when I
already have blankets and a pillow?” Well, the truth
is that there are many different types of sleeping
bags and pillows that are specially designed for use
outdoors. These take advantage of innovative
technologies that will provide you with maximum
comfort when sleeping outdoors or in a tent.
For example, sleeping bags are designed to
withstand certain minimum temperatures. The four
most common categories of sleeping bag ratings are
shown below.
- Summer Season: These sleeping bags have
comfort ratings of +35˚ and higher.
- 3-Season Bag: This category of sleeping bags
is rated for temperatures in between +10˚ to
+35˚.
- Cold Weather: These sleeping bags have
comfort ratings between -10˚ and +10˚.
- Winter / Extreme: Sleeping bags in this
category have comfort rating from -10˚ and
lower.
It is recommended that you purchase a sleeping
bag which is rated for a slightly lower temperature
than you actually plan to be in for the most comfort
when sleeping. For example, if you plan to be
camping where temperatures may reach around
freezing, rather than buying a sleeping bag rated
for 35˚, you should pick the sleeping bag rated for
20˚.
Another factor that has an effect on the comfort
of your sleeping bag is the shape of the bag. Top
Gear Camping carries both mummy sleeping bags and
rectangular sleeping bags. A mummy shaped sleeping
bag is made to fit closer to your body like a
cocoon. These sleeping bags often also have a hood
which can be pulled tight for added warmth. However,
some people prefer a rectangular sleeping bag. These
traditional shaped bags allow for easier movement
and less restraint.
Sleeping bags can be made of several different
types of material including down and synthetic
materials. Down sleeping bags and blankets are often
chosen by backpackers because they can be easily
compressed and are lighter to carry. Synthetic
insulators work well in damp climates because they
will retain their warmth even when wet. In addition,
synthetic sleeping bags and blankets dry quickly.
Therefore, each material has its own ups and downs,
but the choice is ultimately up to the camper to
decide.
Another factor, which will influence your comfort
level when sleeping outdoors, is your choice of
sleeping pad. A sleeping mattress or pad not only
provides comfort from the hard ground, but also acts
as an additional layer of insulation beneath your
sleeping bag.
Backpackers often prefer a foam mattress pad for
camping because this can be easily rolled up and
carried. However, if space and weight are not an
issue to you, we have a number of inflatable air
sleeping pads to choose from. Air mattresses can be
self-inflating which makes them the easiest and most
convenient to inflate. Some air mattresses require a
separate pump to inflate the pad. Air pumps can be
powered by batteries, a standard wall outlet, or a
car cigarette lighter. For backpackers, or those
camping in the wilderness, we even sell hand pumps
for air mattresses.
Another option when sleeping outdoors on a
camping trip is the use of a hammock. Some hammocks
are made with a mosquito net to provide protection
from insects. You can also often purchase rain flys
to cover your hammock and keep you dry during damp
weather. Additionally, freestanding hammocks are
available. These offer the convenience and ease to
allow you set up a hammock in almost any location.
